Leatherwork includes a variety of techniques that allow artisans to manipulate leather into functional and artistic items.

Here are the basic techniques commonly used in leatherworking:

Cutting: This foundational skill involves using sharp knives or cutting tools to shape leather pieces accurately. Proper technique is crucial to avoid injury and ensure clean cuts.

Stitching: Hand stitching, particularly the saddle stitch, is essential for joining leather pieces. This method creates a strong seam by using two needles on a single thread, ensuring durability.

Dyeing: Applying color to leather can enhance its aesthetic appeal. This can be done using various dyes that penetrate or coat the surface of the leather.

Tooling: This decorative technique involves creating designs on the leather's surface using specialized tools. Tooling can include carving, embossing, and stamping to add texture and visual interest.

Shaping: Leather can be shaped by wetting it and then molding it into desired forms. Once dried, it retains the new shape, which is useful for creating structured items like bags or belts.

Finishing: After crafting, finishing techniques such as burnishing (smoothing edges), sealing, and applying protective coatings are applied to enhance durability and appearance.

Perforation: This technique involves creating holes in the leather for decorative purposes or for assembling multiple layers.

Pyrography: Using heat tools to burn designs into leather adds unique visual elements and personalization to projects.
